English[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

After former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who made memorable use of the gesture.

Noun[edit]

Trudeau salute (plural Trudeau salutes)

  1. (Canada, euphemistic) The finger (obscene gesture).

Usage notes[edit]

  • This term, in all its forms, is commonly used as an arthrous proper noun (as in the Trudeau salute), but use as a singular common noun (as in a Trudeau salute) is also adequately attested. However, the common noun's expected plural form Trudeau salutes is all but unattested, and may be considered more or less hypothetical.
