Notes about pronunciations[edit]

First of all, thank you for your contributions so far. There are a couple of small points I need to raise though, primarily about formatting and conventions on Wiktionary -

  • As UK pronunciations can be either rhotic or non-rhotic we transcribe both, usually in the same string by using parentheses, e.g. /pʌn.tə(ɹ)/ and /tɜː(ɹ)m/, never with superscript.
  • Similarly other optional phones in a pronunciation are also marked with parentheses rather than superscript, e.g. /(ə)/.
  • The phones [ɘ] and [ɚ] are not found in UK speech. In the case of the former you might have confused it with the schwa [ə] - it's easily done! In the case of the latter, use /ə(ɹ)/.
  • While [r] is sometimes used elsewhere to transcribe the r sound in English, e.g. rot as /rɒt/ this is incorrect. For historic reasons (which will be dealt with at some time in the future) we use [r] in rhymes templates, but use the correct [ɹ] in the actual pronunciations.
  • If you can, it is helpful if when adding an IPA transcription that you add the SAMPA one also.
  • Audio is linked to on the line following an IPA/SAMPA transcription, and is preceded by an indent. e.g.
* {{a|UK}} {{IPA|/fuː/}}, {{SAMPA|/fu:/}}
*: {{audio|en-uk-foo.ogg|Audio (UK}}}

Lastly, some useful links to help you - w:International Phonetic Alphabet for English, w:SAMPA chart for English and Category:Requests for pronunciation.

Sorry if I've made this sound harsh or complicated - it's not meant to be, and please feel free to ask me or others for any help or advice you need. Thryduulf 17:06, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
