If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects, (especially spelling variations) in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in w:CAT:MtW; request the full history import instead, at WT:ID.

Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{wikipedia}}, or {{wikipediapar|pagename}}. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.

Rhymes template

Copyright violation

No, most of the time sysops don't leave a message at all, since there are relatively few of us keeping an eye on new material and material that violates copyright is often dumped on us. The majority of users who add any material typically show up once, add an entry (good or bad), and never return again. Leaving lengthy explanatory messages is therefore not a good use of the time of the few sysops we have.

The short answer is that we don't ever add in material that is under copyright; it is illegal and unethical to do so. We expect people capable of editing this site to understand and respect basic copyright laws and to know that plagiarism is wrong. You should never add material copied and pasted from such a site.

When a new word is added, its definition must be the original work of the author who wrote it. That does not mean that a reference for authority and inspiration should not be listed. To the contrary, a reference source is encouraged. The best kind is a quotation from a durably archived resource showing the word in use. In the case of turdiform, that might take the form of a quotation from a birding book or ornithological text. Less ideal are references to dictionaries that include the term, but sometimes that is easier to come by. --EncycloPetey 21:55, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
