Etymology[edit]
Through regular velarization in the original open syllable before the ending (-chen < -ihhīn). Compare Schwéngchen from Schwäin (“pig”), and Stengchen from Steen (“stone”). Compare also Ripuarian Central Franconian Weng (“wine”).
