From Old High German wurm, from Proto-Germanic *wurmiz. Compare Luxembourgish Wuerm, Hunsrik Worrem, Plautdietsch Worm, Dutch worm, North Frisian wörem, English worm, Icelandic ormur, Swedish orm, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌼𐍃 (waurms).
