For the purposes of Wiktionary, 'Neapolitan' is used sensu lato to refer to all of the indigenous Italo-Romance varieties labelled 'meridionale intermedio' by Contini (coloured there in dark pink) or 'upper southern Italian' by Anglophone scholarship.
For lexicographical convenience, as well as historical reasons, the variety spoken in Naples serves as the titular dialect and hence the reference point for spelling and lemmatization, whilst forms characteristic of other dialects are provided as regionally-labelled alternative pronunciations. (For examples, see the entries lietto, miedeco, and niro.)
Traditional Neapolitan spellings are to be used when available.
