Is this intended to be a straw poll or a real vote? IMHO it ought to be a real vote. Do folks have concerns about the abuse of these keywords, that someone will gain access to the page and insert keywords we would disapprove of? Are we afraid that we might get too many visitors? Do we need some kind of explicit mechanisms or delegations to empower someone running the initial operation to make decisions required for the effort to succeed and to avoid bad consequences? Do we need a "report" at some date certain from the delegate? I am hoping that Conrad would be willing to be the delegate, but perhaps others might be involved.

IMHO, the delegate or delegates should have broad powers to initiate, modify, and terminate the MetaKeywords Extension effort. It would be nice if there were some page that reported the state of the project, but possibly not necessary. For example, if the keywords are to be on every entry page a user's browser would see, then most browsers allow a user to view the source for a page so that any user could see what keywords have been implemented. If the project had to be terminated without prospect of imminent restart, that would be well worth communicating to all on BP. DCDuring TALK 14:09, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The vote was intended so that if we file a bug request to install the extension we can already demonstrate that we have consensus, so yes a "real" vote. The developers require this before they'll do anything to avoid upsetting people. The configuration would be stored in the MediaWiki namespace, so only admins can edit it. This is fine because the same effect can be achieved at the moment by stuffing things into Mediawiki:Tagline. I think people are afraid of getting too many visitors, and so it's important that all discussion about what keywords to use takes place in a central location, I suspect the beer parlour is ideal. In terms of deciding upon configuration, I suspect we can rely on common-sense, as we do for all the other wide-reaching site-messages (take Mediawiki:Titleblacklist for example). As changes to this message do not instantly affect anything, there's very little damage that can be done by abusing it. Conrad.Irwin 14:22, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
