Etymology[edit]

First attested as seaeuuald and seuuuald in 793. Compound of Old Dutch sew (sea, lake) and uuald (marsh forest, swamp forest). Originally the name of a forest somewhere near Gelderland. The name was later chosen as a suitable name for one of the planned villages in the Flevopolder.
