Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ákmō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱmō (stone, rock) (with the supposedly regular depalatalization of */ḱ/). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic камꙑ (kamy), Latvian akmens, Persian آسمان (âsmân), Sanskrit अश्मन् (aśman), Ancient Greek ἄκμων (ákmōn), English hammer. Doublet of ašmuo.
