Etymology

[edit]

From a widespread Niger-Congo root, Blench (2003) proposes a reconstruction to Proto-Niger-Congo *-kuku, likely Onomatopoeic. See possible reconstruction Proto-Yoruboid *è-lúkùkù. Compare with Nupe lukuku, Urhobo inékuku, Yoruba èrukùkù, Igbo kpalakwukwu, Ebira arekuku, Olukumi olékùkù, Edo elikhukhu, possibly related to Ibibio ebomon-kuku.
