From Javanese ꦲꦚ꧀ꦗꦼꦂ (anjer), a variant of ꦲꦚ꧀ꦗꦶꦂ (anjir, “stake or pole used as a marker”), probably from Arabic أَنْجَر (ʔanjar, “anchor”), from Classical Persian لنگر (langar), from Ancient Greek ἄγκῡρα (ánkūra). Doublet of angker, anjar, anjir, and jangkar.
