From Middle English aposteme (a swelling, inflamation), from Old French aposteme and Late Latin apostēma, from Ancient Greek ἀπόστημα (apóstēma, abcesse) (source of Modern Greek απόστημα (apóstima, abscess)), related to ἀποστέλλω (apostéllō, to remove).
