English[edit]

Adjective[edit]

artificially sweetened (not comparable)

  1. (standards of identity) Sweetened with saccharin, sodium saccharin, or a combination of both.

Usage notes[edit]

Although the phrase generally refers to any food which has been sweetened with a substance not naturally appearing in the food, the term is construed much more narrowly under United States legal standards set forth by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
