Etymology[edit]

Derived from shortening the word azote (nitrogen).

  1. (organic chemistry) Used to form names of organic compounds where a carbon atom is replaced by a nitrogen atom.

Usage notes[edit]

Sometimes a number between hyphens is inserted before it to denote which atom the nitrogen atom replaces.
