Etymology[edit]
From Arabic بَلَخْش (balaḵš) (possibly via Old French balais), from Persian بلخش (balaxš), a form of بدخش (badaxš, “balas”), related to بدخشان (badaxšân, “Badakhshan”), the region where they are found.
