Etymology[edit]

Probably from Arabic باقِي (bāqī), باقِية (bāqiya, rest, remainder). Compare بَواقِي (bawāqī) in the sense of “leftovers”. Used in the same sense as Maltese in the dialect of Sfax (Tunisia).
