From Old Norse brúðgumi, from brúðr ‘bride’ ( > Icelandic brúður) + gumi ‘man’ ( > Icelandic gumi), or from Proto-Germanic *brūdigumô. Compare Faroese brúðgómur, Norwegian and Danish brudgom, Swedish brudgum, English bridegroom, German Bräutigam.
