Etymology[edit]
From Javanese bupati (ꦧꦸꦥꦠꦶ), from Old Javanese bhūpati (“king”), from Sanskrit भूपति (bhūpati) < भूमिपति (bhūmipati), compound of भूमि (bhūmi, “land”) + पति (pati, “lord”). Cognate of Balinese ᬪᬹᬧᬢᬶ (bupati).
