Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *burdā, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥dʰo (compare English board, Lithuanian bartà).[1] Alternatively a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (to carry, bear) (cf. with Old English byrd (burden), German Bürde (burden, weight), Icelandic byrði (burden)). For sense development cf. Italian fardello, both meaning sack, bag and burden.

  1. thickly-woven cotton sackcloth
  2. sack, bag
