Possibly from Hokkien 麻糍 (môa-chî) or a similar cognate, or Spanish buche (“mouthful”). Compare Tagalog butse (“Jian dui”), Tagalog matse (“Mache”), Cebuano masi (“Masi”), Kapampangan motsi (“Moche”).
