Etymology[edit]

From Late Latin cattus or catta, with a diminutive suffix -ushi / -ushe added later (the original root would have been *catu or *catã). Compare the Daco-Romanian cognate cătușă (handcuffs), which underwent further semantic change and lost the original meaning.
