Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *kas, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔas ~ *ʔəs. Cognate with Pacoh ayh, éih, Khasi at, Khmu [Cuang] ʔɛh.

See cứt (shit) and củi (firewood) for two other known cases where Vietic velar initial corresponds to zero-initial in other Austroasiatic branches.
