From Brythonic *dametos (compare Breton dañvad, Cornish davas), diminutive of Proto-Celtic *damos ‘ox’ (compare Irish damh), from Proto-Indo-European *dm̥h₂-ó- ‘bull’ (compare Albanian dem ‘bullock’, Greek δάμαλος (dámalos) ‘calf’), from *démh₂- ‘to tame’ (compare Welsh addef ‘to concede, admit’, Latin domāre, English tame).
