[edit] Etymology
It is agreed to be from Proto-Indo-European *del- (“‘to split, carve, cut’”), but whether it is a substratum word, akin to Albanian daltë, or an early loan from Proto-Slavic *dolto (compare e.g. Slovak dlato) is disputed.
