From Persian دهقان (dehqân, landowner) From Middle Persian 𐭣𐭧𐭩𐭥𐭪𐭠𐭭 (dahigān, countryman, farmer), originally meaning “pertaining to the Deh”, from Middle Persian 𐭬𐭲𐭠 (deh, country, land, village).
