From Proto-Albanian *aiwesyā (Jokl L.-k. U. 34), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂óyu (vital energy, vitality). Cognate to Ancient Greek αἰές (aiés, always), Latin aevus (eternity, age, time) and Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍅𐍃 (aiws, time, eternity, world).
