Etymology[edit]

From Middle Low German vīentlik, from vient + -lik, merged with Norwegian Nynorsk fiende and -leg, keeping the sound -t- in the middle. Compare Swedish fientlig, Norwegian Bokmål fiendtlig and Danish fjendtlig.
