Danish[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈɡ̊ɛˀw], [ˈɡ̊ɛwˀ]

Etymology 1[edit]

From Old Danish gæv, giæv, gev, from Old Norse gæfr (comfortable), from Proto-Germanic *gēbiz, cognate with Dutch gaaf (complete, smooth). Derived from the verb *gebaną (to give).

Adjective[edit]

gæv (neuter gævt, plural and definite singular attributive gæve)

  1. doughty, brave

Etymology 2[edit]

From Old Danish giav, giæf, from Old Norse gjǫf (gift), from Proto-Germanic *gebō, cognate with Gothic 𐌲𐌹𐌱𐌰 (giba). Derived from *gebaną (to give). A related word has replaced this word in its central meaning "gift", namely gave, which is probably a loan from Middle Low German gābe, from Proto-Germanic *gēbǭ (gift, giving), cognate with German Gabe.

Noun[edit]

gæv c (singular definite gæven, plural indefinite gæve)

  1. (obsolete) feed (a portion of food for domestic animals)
  2. (obsolete) a place for feeding animals
