From Proto-Germanic *gahaitaną (to promise), equivalent to gi- +‎ hetan. Cognate with Old English gehatan, Old High German giheizan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (gahaitan).
