From older and dialectal glisht, from Proto-Albanian *glista, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelH- 'to sting' (compare German Kiel ‘quill’, Lithuanian gãlas ‘end, tip’, Greek βελόνα (velóna) ‘needle’).
