Etymology[edit]

Probably from Middle Dutch gote or Middle Low German gāte, gōte, gȫte (gutter), both ultimately from Proto-Germanic *gutǭ (groove; channel; gutter), related to the verb *geutaną (to pour). Related to Old Frisian gete (outpouring); see geate.
