From Proto-Germanic *grīpaną, whence also Old Saxon grīpan, Old Dutch grīpan, Old English grīpan, Old Norse grípa, Gothic 𐌲𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍀𐌰𐌽 (greipan). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰreyb- (to grasp, grab).
