From Old High German grīnan, from Proto-Germanic *grīnaną (to snarl, show teeth, growl). Compare Luxembourgish gréngen (to grizzle, cry), German greinen (to whine, moan), Faroese grína (to grin, laugh), Swedish grina (to weep, cry; to laugh), Danish grine (to laugh).
