From Old Norse hǫggva, from Proto-Germanic *hawwaną. Cognate with Danish hugge, Swedish hugga.

Usage notes[edit]

The past participle forms hogginn (supine hoggið) and högginn (supine höggið) also exist, but are widely considered nonstandard.
