Etymology[edit]

From Old Ossetic, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *xwarž-; cognate with Iron Ossetian хорз (xorz), Digor Ossetian хуарз (xwarz, good), Balochi اَوَرزا(awarza "pleasant, agreeable"), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwʾlyst' /⁠xwālist⁠/, sweetest), and Avestan 𐬓𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬀- (xᵛarəzišta-, sweetest). Akin to Old Armenian ախորժ (axorž), an Iranian borrowing. Note also Persian خوش (xoš).
