Swedish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

huru +‎ väl, used since 1650, cognate with Danish hvorvel.

Conjunction[edit]

huruväl

  1. (obsolete) albeit, although, though

Usage notes[edit]

  • Dictionaries from 1904 and 1919 list ehuruväl, but not huruväl.
  • SAOB notes that it can also be written as separate words (huru väl). But then it risks to be mistaken for the much more common use (huru väl = how well), e.g. en läroanstalts betydelse ligger icke i huru många, utan huru väl den undervisar (a school's merit is not based on how many, but how well it educates). One can even find cases where this more common use appears written together as one word.
