Representing a combining form of Ancient Greek κλέπτης (“thief”), κλέπτω (“steal”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)klep- (“to steal”). Cognate with Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌹𐍆𐌰𐌽 (hlifan, “to steal”), Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌹𐍆𐍄𐌿𐍃 (hliftus, “thief”).
