Etymology[edit]

From Middle English knottil, cnottel (little knot), diminutive of knotte, cnotte (knot), equivalent to knot +‎ -le. Cognate with Middle Dutch knuttel, Middle Low German knutel, Middle High German Knüttel (little stick). Compare also Old English cnyttels (string, fiber, sinew).
