Etymology[edit]

Probably from Arabic أَيُّمَا (ʔayyumā, which, whichever) with the definite article, thus from underlying الأَيُّمَا (al-ʔayyumā). The development of أَيّ (ʔayy) into -ie- compare also in xiex and related words.
