From Proto-Slavic *mьčь, *mečь, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *mēkijaz, which gave māki in Old Saxon, mækir in Old Norse , and 𐌼𐌴𐌺𐌴𐌹𐍃 (mēkeis) in Gothic (only attested in inflected forms).
