Etymology[edit]

From Anglo-Norman maumeterie, a reduced form of mahumetterie (idolatry, heathendom), from Mahumet (Muhammad), from Old French Mahomet, ultimately from Arabic محمد (see Muhammad for more). Equivalent to mammet +‎ -ry.
