Etymology[edit]

From German Mastzelle f, "feeding cell," coined in 1878 by immunologist Paul Ehrlich; "Mast" + Ancient Greek κύτος (kútos, cell). Not a cognate with the Ancient Greek root μαστός (mastós, (human) breast).
