From Middle Dutch meercatte (monkey,ape), possibly from mere (lake, sea) + catte (cat) (modern Dutch meer +‎ kat), or possibly from some Indo-Aryan language (compare Sanskrit मर्कट (markaṭa, monkey)), though the Old High German cognate merikazza (German Meerkatze) predated known contact with speakers of those languages.
