Based on earlier middelerd, featuring the frequent conflation of erd with erthe; in turn an alteration of earlier middenerd; from Old English middaneard, in turn an alteration of Old English middanġeard; derived from Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz. Equivalent to middel +‎ erthe.
