From a Late Latin *mustaceus, from Medieval Greek μουστάκιον (moustákion), diminutive of (Doric) Ancient Greek μύσταξ (mústaks, upper lip), from Proto-Indo-European *mendh (to chew). Related to French moustache, Sicilian mustazzu, Romanian mustață, Spanish mostacho.
