Etymology 1[edit]

Inherited from Middle French mélange, meslange, from Old French meslance, meslinges (set of diverse elements), apparently a borrowing from Frankish *misklinga (mixture), from Frankish *misklōn (to mix). Compare Old High German miskilunga (mixture, mess). Alternatively, derived natively from Old French mescler (to mix), from Early Medieval Latin misculare. Equivalent to mêler +‎ -ange (either directly or by surface analysis).
