Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian * ̊tupi-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teu-p- 'to push, beat'. Cognate to Ancient Greek τύππω (túppō, to strike, beat). A formation with the prefix për-[1]. The root vowel has undergone umlaut. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *teup ' to get down, conceal oneself'. Compare Lithuanian tūpiù (to get down, lay on one's knees), Old Norse Þopta (thwart), Gothic Þiubs (Þiubs, thief)[2].
