Etymology[edit]

Compound pette-gislo. The second part is from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gīˀ(s)lāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷiHl-. Cognate with Lithuanian gýsla (vein), Latvian dzīsla (vein) and Proto-Slavic *žila (vein, tendon).
