Slovak[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From pre- + -tekať, which is the imperfective form of tiecť used in compounds. Inherited from Proto-Slavic *teťi (to flow, run) from earlier *tekti, from Proto-Indo-European *tekʷ- (to run, flow).

The primary meaning of the word tiecť and its compounds is to flow (sense 1), but the other meaning, to run, has been preserved in some compounds (sense 2).
