Singularised plural of the variant qalza, from older Sicilian *calza (hose, stocking), from Early Medieval Latin calcea, from Latin calceus (shoe). Compare contemporary Sicilian causi, cansi (trousers) and, with the original sense and form preserved, Italian calza (sock, stocking).
